The Humanist Center of Cultures announces its fifth annual Thanksgiving with a multicultural food festival to be held Sunday, November 23 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. The potluck celebration will take place at Sunnyside Community Services located at 43-31 39th Street.
Each year brings considerable participation by the city's diverse population and has offered food, dance and music from Africa, the Far East, Latin America and South Asia.
Says media coordinator of the event, Sushmita Mukherjee, "We organize this party every year to celebrate and appreciate the diversity in our unique community. Our Thanksgiving festival seeks to overcome the cultural fragmentation of our society and to salute the immigrants who have contributed positively to their adopted homeland."
Everyone is welcome and the event is free to all. We ask that you please bring a dish to share with others.

On November 6, Yolanda Leon, Co-founder of the Jackson Heights Humanist Neighborhood Center, received a Neighborhood Leadership Award from the New York Women's Foundation. The New York Women's Foundation is "a cross-cultural alliance of women helping low-income women and girls in the five boroughs to achieve sustained economic security through expanded opportunities." Introducing Yolanda and other members of the Humanist Center of Cultures, the foundation remarked "in fact they live their mission."

The Humanist Center of Cultures is looking for student organizers to help develop International Support Campaigns at New York area universities. The Campaigns are to collect school and medical supplies for health and education projects currently underway in Mozambique and Bangladesh.
A special presentation for volunteer organizers will be held on Sunday, November 9, from 6-8 pm, at the SEIU Building located at 101 Avenue of the Americas (between Grand and Watts Streets, 1 block north of Canal Street). People also invited to donate medical materials, which will be brought to Bangladesh on Nov. 11 and distributed directly to volunteers opening up free health clinics in 4 new neighborhoods of Dhaka, the capital.
There is special need for the following items:

The Humanist Center of Cultures announces its fall Open House and Collection Drive to be held Sunday, November 9, from 6-8 pm. at the SEIU Building Service Local 32BJ located at 101 Avenue of the Americas (between Grand and Watts Streets). The evening will include a special presentation on our Human Support Campaign, which addresses concrete issues in the areas of Health, Education and Quality of Life in Bangladesh and Mozambique.
We invite people to bring/donate medical materials for our all-volunteer Health projects in several cities and towns of Bangladesh and Mozambique. The current batch of gifts will be brought to Bangladesh the following week (Nov. 11) and distributed directly to volunteers opening up free health clinics in 4 new neighborhoods of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
There is an especially serious need for the following items:
The Human Support Campaign is based on reciprocity, where we help improve the daily living conditions in Bangladesh and Mozambique, while learning the value of friendship, sharing and solidarity from them. We are currently looking for volunteers who want to help organize these campaigns here in New York.
